CYPRESS INTO BUILDING BLOCK SETS WITH CONTAQ BUY

San Jose, California-based Cypress Semiconductor Corp is entering the personal computer building block chip set business with the acquisition of Contaq Microsystems Inc, also in San Jose, for $1.7m. Contaq becomes part of Cypress’s Computation Products Division, and its current product portfolio includes chip sets for 80486-based personal computers, and Peripheral Component Interconnect local bus controllers for graphics and multimedia desktop applications. The company has plans a low-power 3.3V chip set for the Pentium P54C, and a P54C bus controller.
