Following PointCast Inc’s exit from the Asian market after its agreement with China Internet Corp flopped (CI No 3,440), CyberSource is will take a chance in Asia and form a partnership with China Internet. California-based CyberSource plans to introduce electronic commerce technology to China, Hong Kong and Asia as a result of the partnership. The company will establish a Hong Kong data center by the end of the year, that will deliver commerce services to merchants in its designated regions. Under the terms of the agreement, China Internet will be able to use CyberSource’s secure electronic software delivery and transaction-processing technology. The technology will contribute towards the ongoing establishment of a US-funded project to build a National Center for Electronic Software Download, which will cover China and Hong Kong, electronically distributing software. CyberSource is not concerned about the collapse of China Internet’s deal with PointCast, and says it is working on something completely different. A company spokesperson said the PointCast deal is irrelevant to what CyberSource is doing, and mentioned the company plans to expand its presence in national electronic software centers on a global basis in the coming weeks.
