Trend Micro updates Deep Security for VMware environments

Platform aims to protect physical, virtual and cloud servers

By Steve Evans

Trend Micro has launched the latest version of its server security platform in Europe. Deep Security 8.0 offers protection for physical, virtual and cloud servers, the company said.

Unveiled at VMworld Europe 2011 in Copenhagen Deep Security 8.0 is designed specifically for VMware vSphere 5 virtual environments, Harish Agastya, director of product marketing, data centre security at Trend Micro, told CBR.

The new updates introduce agentless integrity monitoring capabilities alongside antimalware, intrusion prevention, firewall, web app protection features, application control and log inspection. For physical servers Deep Security 8.0 offers automatic cloud-based event white-listing, which Agastya says makes the administration side of things easier.

"It is all designed to work on a virtual infrastructure as security needs to be tightly integrated with the hypervisor," Agastya told CBR. "Current security set ups are not designed for that, the model has stayed the same for a long time. If a company is ramping up its virtual infrastructure the current security model will hold it back."

Version 8.0 also includes features that are designed to protect virtual desktop environments. It uses an agent-based antimalware platform to monitor virtual desktops as they move outside, and back, into the data centre, the company said.

Security was a big theme at VMworld Europe this year, with VMware introducing a new cloud-based management platform that is said to help with secure virtual environments.

The company also demonstrated mobile virtualisation, which enables users to run two separate identities on a single smartphone. VMware CEO Paul Maritz claimed the corporate side of the device is walled off from the personal content, meaning any security issue on one side will not affect the other.
