Virgin Media has switched on a new filtering system to help parents prevent kids from inappropriate material online.

The new ‘Web Safe’ system currently stops access to sites that feature pornography, drug, hate speech, aggression, self-harm and suicide.

The latest move makes Virgin Media the last of the four ISPs to activate government-mandated porn filtering system.

According to the ISP, only new consumers, initially, will be offered a choice of turning on or off the system.

The company also developed Switched On Families, which is a guide to help parents set up and manage the filtering system.

The new system will work alongside software firm F-Secure SAFE, which aims to protect kids from illegal and unsuitable content online.

BT has also launched BT Parental Controls, while Sky rolled out Broadband Shield and TalkTalk launched HomeSafe filtering systems.

Recent tests carried out by Mediawatch-UK showed that the filtering systems had failed to block porn searches, allowing children access to adult content.
