Kaspersky Lab researchers have discovered the first ever SMS Trojan to breach US soil.
Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakeInst.ef is a fake porn app that disguises itself as an application for downloading and watching porn videos. It is able to send text messages to premium rate phone numbers secretly, and can also intercept incoming SMS messages.
Kaspersky Lab, which reported the Trojan in this blog post, says that the text messages the fake app can send cost $2 each.
It was originally discovered by Kaspersky in February 2013, and was found to be originating from Russia. 14 various versions of the Trojan have emerged since then, targeting users across 66 countries.
According to Kaspersky statistics, the most infected countries were Russia and the USA, with Ukraine and Germany coming in second place.
Here is what Kaspersky says the app looks like.
