A Canadian teenager has become the first person detained in relation to the Heartbleed hack after reportedly using it to steal data from Canada’s tax agency website.
Stephen Arthuro Solis-Reyes, 19, allegedly took private data including social insurance numbers of around 900 citizens.
Arrested at his home on April 15, Solis-Reyes will now face charges of mischief and unauthorised use of a computer to steal data from the tax agency.
RCMP assistant commissioner Gilles Michaud said that the breach of security was treated as a high priority case.
"Investigators from National Division, along with our counterparts in "O" Division, have been working tirelessly over the last four days analysing data, following leads, conducting interviews, obtaining and executing legal authorisations and liaising with our partners," Michaud said.
The suspect allegedly exploited the Heartbleed vulnerability in the OpenSSL software and stole the data last week.
The vulnerability enables cyber criminals to snoop on online communications, pinch data, compromise websites and unlock encrypted information.
