Privacy concerns barrier to photo sharing in UK

Consumers have more faith in email than in social media, perhaps mistakenly.

By Jimmy Nicholls

Privacy concerns are the biggest barrier to British families sharing photos online, according to a survey by the sharing platform KatchUp.

Two-thirds of those asked said they would not share some pictures with family members over social media due to such fears, only slightly less than those worried about photo privacy on such platforms.

Conversely, almost 60% also said they use email as the main method of sharing photos online, which likely indicates that they view it as more private or more secure than social media – claims which would be regarded as controversial in the cybersecurity industry.

Katie Hobbs, founder of KatchUp, said: "I can’t believe that in the 40 years since it was invented, families still haven’t found a way of sharing that matches the safety and peace of mind that email gives us."

Demand for photo sharing in the UK was high, with half of respondents saying they feel that they miss out on important parts of their families lives without such a facility, and a third saying they struggle to keep in touch without it.

A significant proportion of the British have also taken against sharing photos of christenings or children generally, with 38% and 30% respectively finding it inappropriate.
