NFC systems hacked at Mobile Pwn2Own

Security professionals successfully hacked the payment system via smartphones.

By CBR Staff Writer

Security professionals have exposed several bugs in Near Field Communication (NFC) payment systems during the Mobile Pwn2Own event in Tokyo.

As part of the efforts to demonstrate the vulnerabilities of NFC, experts used eight smartphones including the Apple iPhone, Blackberry Z30, Amazon Fire phone and Google Nexus 7.

Hackers were able to successfully exploited the already discovered bugs to attack five devices, with three teams successfully extracting data at will from the devices, the BBC noted.

Two attacks were also able to compromise a phone through its on-board web browser.

Among all the devices, the Apple iPhone 5S, Samsung Galaxy 5, LG Nexus 5 and Amazon Fire Phone were successfully hacked.

The vulnerabilities have now been shared with the smartphone manufacturers in a bid to patch the bugs.

Using NFC, individuals can pay for goods and services via their handset, while the integration of the technology on devices has turned out to be beneficial to hackers seeking a sneaky process to compromise a mobile device.
