The number of mobile malware and high-risk apps detected in Android devices reached one million during the first three quarters of 2013, according to a report from Trend Micro.
According to the Mobile App Reputation Service Feedback report, over 700, 000 malicious and risky apps were found in the wild during the second quarter of the year.
Among the malicious apps, 75% perform outright malicious routines, while 25% exhibit dubious routines including adware.
The mobile malware list was topped by FAKEINST with a 34% share and OPFAKE with a 30% share of the total malwares identified.
FAKEINST malware is masked as a legitimate app and sends unauthorised text messages to certain numbers as well as registers users to costly services.
The OPFAKE malware is similar to FAKEINST, while one of its variant was able to open a HTML file, enabling users to download a potentially malicious file, apart from sending messages to certain numbers and registering users to costly services.
The high-risk apps were led by ARPUSH and LEADBOLT with a 33% and 27% share of the total, respectively, while both apps are adware and infostealers that gather device-related data including OS information, GPS location, IMEI etc.
The mobile devices were also attacked after using rogue versions of popular apps and adware that mimicked real apps.
