Ministry of Defence offers £2m to cyber security firms

UK military is seeking automated cyber defence tools.

By Jimmy Nicholls

The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) is running a £2m contest seeking developers of automated cyber defence tools.

Entrants are asked to provide proof-of-concept proposals to identify, analyse and respond to cyber attacks, with the competition due to launch on September 9 at De Vere Canary Wharf in London.

Jim Pennycook, head of operations at the MoD’s Centre for Defence Enterprise, said: "Our armed forces rely on cyberspace to conduct successful operations and the £2m funding available for this competition demonstrates MoD’s commitment to cyber defence.

"Automated responses are an essential part of cyber defence processes and this funding will allow us to support a range of innovative proposals in this area."

Funding will be staggered over two phases with £1m assigned to each stage, and industry and academia are encouraged to look into the contest, which closes on October 23.

Those who wish to find out more can consult the Government’s website.
