Microsoft has taken further steps to protect consumer data after releasing a new encryption service expected to be available soon.

The Office 365 Message Encryption service will allow users to send encrypted emails to people outside their company, ensuring privacy and security of emails.

The company said users can send encrypted emails with better protection to any destination including Outlook.com, Yahoo, Gmail, Exchange Server, Lotus Notes, GroupWise and Squirrel Mail.

The new Office 365 Message Encryption service include features from its predecessor Exchange Hosted Encryption (EHE), and alsoallows users to apply a company’s brand to messages.

The service comes with the standalone version of Windows Azure Rights Management, which offers internal and external information protection and traditional Rights Management capabilities for internal users.

The company is planning to offer the service to Office 365 E3 and E4 users for free, while others can pay $2 per month for it.
