The USA has once again topped the list of prime distributors of spam, despite a decrease of 2.4% compared to the March figure, according to Kaspersky Lab’s spam report for May 2010.

The quantity of spam originating from America increased by 8.5%, touching its usual level of 20.7%, while India and Russia maintained their second and third position with 7.5% and 5.4%, respectively.

According to the report, Vietnam and the Republic of Korea stood at fourth and fifth positions with 4.8% and 4.1%, respectively, while China and Brazil are trailing with 3.6% and 3.7%, respectively.

However, spam flows coming from Germany and Italy recorded a drop of 2% compared to the previous month, while the report saw a newcomer in May Top 20 with Argentina distributing 2.1% of the total volume of spam.

The report revealed no major changes in the rating of the spam categories compared to the previous month, with the Medications and Health-Related Goods and Services category retaining its top position in English-language spam with 30%.

The Computer Fraud category again came second, with a marginal drop of 3% compared to April’s figure, while the share of the Personal Finance category increased by 5% compared to the previous month and stood 3rd in May’s Top 10 most popular spam categories.

The report also revealed no change in the number of links to phishing sites compared to April’s figure, accounting for 0.02% of all emails with PayPal, eBay, HSBC and Facebook remaining the most popular targets for phishers, with 50.4%, 13.4%, 8.5% and 6.9%, respectively.
