JanusNET brings email security platform to the UK

Time to tackle data loss via mobiles?

By Steve Evans

Australian firm janusNET has launched its email security product in the UK, as it looks to help companies reduce the threat of data loss via mobile devices.

Called janusGATE Mobile the product filters emails between an organisation’s mail server and employees’ smartphones, meaning the delivery of emails deemed sensitive by the company to mobile devices can be controlled.

Speaking to CBR, managing director Greg Colla said a lot of companies keep their most valuable information on email but don’t approach security for it in the same way as other systems. This issue is exacerbated by the increasing number of workers using their own devices, which are often much more insecure than corporate devices.

To get around the issue of personal devices the janusGATE Mobile platform does not need to be installed on smartphones and doesn’t affect the performance of these devices. It can work across a number of devices and operating systems, including iPhone and iPad, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android and Blackberry, Colla said.

It works by enabling users to connect to the Exchange sever via ActiveSync and all the configuration is managed at the Exchange Client Access Server. The platform can scan any outgoing email for sensitive information via keywords, whether that information is in the body of the email or an attachment.

If janusGATE Mobile detects any sensitive information it can block the email from being sent, so the information does not leave the company’s firewall. When the recipient checks their messages on their smartphone they will receive an email informing them that the original email has been blocked and is waiting for them at work.

"Companies know that maybe 2% of their information is very sensitive. Historically they have locked up all their information with the requirements for that 2%, which makes accessibility overly complicated" Colla said. "So we’re seeing a shift towards classifying the information and protect it accordingly."

That means putting heavy security around the most sensitive information – in this case not sending out sensitive emails to mobile devices – while making access to less sensitive information easier by enabling users to read necessary emails when working on their mobile devices, Colla said.

JanusNET was formed back in 2005 and has a strong customer base in governments and local authorities due to their requirements to ensure data is classified, Colla said. Its products have been available in the UK through distributors for a while but the company is now looking to establish itself here.
