Intel president Renee James has been appointed as vice chair of the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC).

In her role she will advise US president Barack Obama on technical and policy issues including information systems, infrastructure protection and emergency preparedness, and work under Palo Alto Networks chief executive Mark McLaughlin.

As president of Intel, James has overseen the rebranding of McAfee into Intel Security, an ongoing project that some have argued is an attempt to distance the brand from John McAfee, who has publicly criticised his old firm.

She has previously co-authored a report for NSTAC on information and communication mobilisation, which outlines how the country should operate in the event of a major cybersecurity event.

Others on the committee include Scott Charney, CVP of Trustworthy Computing at Microsoft; David DeWalt, chief executive of security firm FireEye; and John Stankey, chief strategy officer of telecoms firm AT&T.
