Google looks for home security push with Dropcam acquisition

Greg Duffy and Aamir Virani launched Dropcam in 2009.

By CBR Staff Writer

Google is reportedly looking to further boost its home security business with acquisition of Dropcam, a company which makes Wi-fi cameras.

The company could acquire Dropcam through its unit subsidiary Nest, which Google bought earlier this year for $3.2bn.

Both the companies are still to confirm the status of talks over the deal, according to theinformation.com.

Dropcam makes cameras which can stream videos of what is happening around the home, to computer and smartphones.

Greg Duffy and Aamir Virani launched Dropcam in 2009, and the wi-fi cameras were initially developed to keep a tab on dog menace around neighbourhood.

Dropcam is now used to keep a watch on babies, keep an eye on pets and catch unsuspecting thieves.

Google’s Nest Labs makes sensor-driven, Wi-Fi-enabled programmable thermostats and smoke detectors.
