Hackers thought to be from the Lizard Squad group have defaced the mobile news site GSMArena, redirecting users to another site.

Users were sent to a page with a picture of a hacker wearing a t-shirt with the phrase "hack the planet" written on it, but normal service has now been restored.

Though Lizard Squad’s Twitter account has not claimed credit for the attack, a number of affiliated accounts have posted messages about the attack, retweeting articles that credited the group with it.

Yet the attack deviates from the normal style of Lizard Squad, which has tended to use distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to bring internet services to a halt through excessive traffic.

Previous attacks by the group have targeted PlayStation and Xbox gaming networks, as well as the fantasy role-playing game Runescape, the streaming platform Twitch, and the Vatican.

Following the attack on Twitch the group had claimed it would disband, saying "we have lives believe it or not, things to do, people to meet".

GSMArena has been contacted for comment.
