BMC Software has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately-held IT discovery tools provider Tideway Systems, to enhance its Business Service Management (BSM) platform and help organisations minimise the risks associated with data centre consolidation, virtualisation and compliance.

Headquartered in London and New York, Tideway Systems provides the platform for IT discovery. Tideway’s Foundation software appliance discovers business’ servers, software, dependencies and business applications.

According to BMC, the new offering supports a set of discovery requirements for BSM and features integration with its Atrium Configuration Management Database (CMDB) based on Tideway’s long-time membership in BMC’s Technology Alliance Partner program. This allows customers to understand the relationships and dependencies of their physical assets and applications.

BMC said that the addition of Tideway technology provides its customers with an open library of predefined IT configuration discovery patterns, which provide descriptions of software and hardware resources that allow IT organisations to automatically identify and characterise their environment and map related application dependencies and services.

Earlier in August, BMC Software has acquired middleware management vendor MQSoftware to expand its management platform to enable clients manage their entire mainframe infrastructure.

Dev Ittycheria, president of enterprise service management at BMC software, said: “Given the nature of today’s highly complex and rapidly evolving computing environments, having deep visibility and clear understanding of the critical business services and their associated relationships to specific IT resources is fundamental to improving service quality, minimising risk and reducing IT costs.

“With the acquisition of Tideway, BMC adds the industry’s leading application discovery and dependency mapping capabilities to manage and maintain complex data centre environments including distributed, virtual and mainframe IT platforms and further extends its leadership in business service management.”

Financial details of the deal have not been revealed. BMC expects the deal to close within a week.
