Bitdefender has launched a new layer of protection against unwanted adverts and toolbars, adding a free Adware Removal Tool for PC to its technologies.

With malvertising taking the cyber-crime spotlight, the Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool for PC provides complete protection against malicious programs that can hijack computers. The tool eliminates annoying apps, adware, toolbars and other browser add-ons.

Supporting any PC with Windows (XP or later) and Internet Explorer (6 or later), the tool scans the computer before marking a list of dangerous and annoying apps such as Adware.SwiftBrowse, Adware.Plush and Adware.BrowseFox. It only deletes programs after user approval.

The tool also provides protection against Bundler and Keylogger software, which invade users’ privacy and may cause financial damage. Application.Bundler installers typically send private data, including geo-location, to third-party servers, while Keyloggers can steal sensitive information such as credit card data and spy on browser activity.

The introduction of the tool follows a recent Bitdefender study that showed one in three ad networks may serve malvertising. The research revealed almost 7% of advertising landing pages were misleading, infecting users with malware or deceiving them with fraud, spam and phishing.

"We decided to use our expertise to create our own adware removal tool to offer full-range protection against the whole series of adware-related threats," states Catalin Cosoi, Chief Security Strategist at Bitdefender. "The tool is backed-up by our anti-malware technologies. It helps users reclaim their computers, by keeping the apps they like, and getting rid of the numerous unwanted programs."
