The wheel turns full circle, and Cable & Wireless Plc, which lost the 15-year contract to run national and international telecommunications for the Solomon Islands to British Telecom International last year, has won the business back after the rebid following the failure of Telecom and Solomon to agree terms last November (CI No 814): Cable & Wireless will own 40% of a new Solomon Islands Telekom Co Ltd with the government holding the rest, and has also been awarded a UKP2.7m contract to install and commission a domestic satellite system using the Dama/Vista technology, which is to link the capital, Honiara, with several of the main rural centres through the islands.
