Global carrier Cable & Wireless Plc has outlined its plans to expand its Web Content Distributor internationally, following its US launch three months ago. The service is C&W’s attempt to leverage its network to become a player in the growing market for web content delivery systems, populated by the likes of Akamai Technologies Inc and Sandpiper Networks Inc. The company uses Inktomi CorpÆs Traffic Server software at its points of presence to cache selected content from its customers. As of this week, PoPs in London, Frankfurt and Hong Kong have been installed with the capability, and 10 more will be added in March at locations in Paris, Sydney and Madrid among others. By April 2001, C&W expects 84 nodes to be connected to the service.
