C&W ANNOUNCES TELECOMMUNICATIONS LINK BETWEEN HONG KONG AND CHINA OPEN

Cable & Wireless Plc also announced that the UKP7m UK-made fibre optic telecommunications link between Hong Kong and nearby Guangdong Province in the People’s Republic of China was opened on Friday with a video-conference between Hong Kong and the capital, Guangzhou: the 125-mile cable – using Pirelli SpA fibre and GEC Plessey Telecommunications transmission equipment – links Hong Kong and four Guangdong cities with initial capacity of 7,680 calls, expandable to 46,000.
