When writing up IBM Corp announcements, one sometimes has the option of working either from the press release or the customer letter, the one being a highly colourful description intended to put the product in the best possible light, the other a sober (and extraordinarily verbose and jargon-ridden) technical description: the need to be aware of both is underlined by the announcement of AIX 4.1, which the press release says offers binary compatibility for the vast majority of the more than 10,000 existing AIX applications – and even promises unprecedented compatibility in the headline – where the Ivory (customer letter) says only that it is largely compatible with AIX 3.
