And Cincom’s arch-rival Cullinet Software Inc in Westwood, Massachusetts has begun shipping its IDMS/SQL, production-power relational database management system designed specifically for the DEC VAX. IDMS/SQL has the KnowledgeBuild tool set integrated, claiming that the product significantly outperforms the leading relational databases on the market, in TP1 benchmarks doing 13.4 transactions per second on a VAX 8550 with VMS 4.6 on a database of 1m records. IDMS/SQL uses a modular architecture that supports query optimisation and compiled queries, multithreading, bulk data access, and advanced indexing and supports continuous, unattended operation. A companion KnowledgeLink product is promised to enable IDMS/SQL users to exchange information selectively with IDMS/R on IBM, Fujitsu, and Siemens mainframes, with ships in the third quarter. Prices for IDMS/SQL with KnowledgeBuild range from $6,000 for the VAXstation 2000 and $70,000 for the VAX 8250 to $280,000 for the VAX 8978.
