British Telecommunications Plc has launched the Meridian Companion 10, a CT2 cordles phone technology-based switch based on the existing Meridian PABX system. The product is designed for the workplace, rather than as a telepoint system, and when used in conjunction with a system such as the Meridian 1, supports up to 31 cordless handsets (plus one wired phone) in a designated coverage area that is provided by up to 15 base stations. The base stations are mains-powered and can handle two calls simultaneously. British Telecom says that the Companion is the first commercial CT2 system to feature full handoff and roaming capabilities, enabling the user complete mobility within the coverage area. The handsets offer the functionality that is available from a standard digital feature phone: memory redial, muting and adjustable ringer and audio volumes. They also offer touch tone operation and incorporate several special function keys. The low power demands of the technology – 10mW – enable units to provide a continuous talk time of around four hours before recharging is necessary. Pricing for an average system five base stations, five wired phones, seven cordless handsets, and a control unit – is expected to come out in the region of UKP8,000.
