Crytek has released a new version of its CryEngine software development tool for licensed game developers.
The new engine offers improvements and support for both current and next generation platforms including Xbox one, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Wii U.
The Frankfurt-based company, founded in 1999, said the solution will no longer be identified by version numbers.
Carl Jones, business development director at Crytek, said the engine has been changed many time since launching in 2009.
"We have revolutionised many parts of the engine: we have overhauled our entire lighting system, built movie quality character rendering and animation solutions, vastly improved the speed and effectiveness of our Sandbox editor, and even our rendering has changed with tessellation, pixel accurate displacement mapping and now physical based rendering; all of this while maintaining our first principal: that making games should be real-time, all the time," he explained.
Crytek said it has merged the company’s engine licensing and its R&D departments in order to increase the level of care offered to game licensees.
Crytek has also released an update for its free CryEngine package, introducing the tools used to create Crysis 3, which is widely considered a visual benchmark in gaming visuals.
The free version of the SDK has been downloaded over five million times.
