Criterion HPS, a provider of optimised solution servers, has introduced its Extreme family of high performance platforms powered by new Intel Xeon 5600 Nehalem processors (code named Westmere).

The Intel Xeon 5600 series chips are a family of 32-nanometer processors that support up to six cores, with two threads per core for a total of 12 threads per processor. These chips include enhanced security features and energy efficiency capabilities.

The company said that its Phantom Extreme can be configured to provide up to 192GB of RAM and 24TB of internal raid storage in a form factor that weighs roughly 50 pounds. In addition to the Phantom Extreme, the original Criterion HPS Phantom supercomputer is available for those workloads that require a large number of physical processing cores.

The new Westmere processors provide significant performance improvements for certain types of high performance workloads that run on the new Phantom Extreme.
