There could be a few more DEC computers joining the early model VAX 6000s on fire sale following a fierce fire at its Crescent software development and administrative facility in Basingstoke yesterday: the building houses computers worth UKP10m and the company believes it can salvage them – or at least rescue their precious data, although it has no idea when it will get the systems back on line; the building collapsed onto some 60 cars despite the efforts of the 80 firemen fighting the inferno as the 350 employees watched helplessly.
