At the beginning of the month, Cray Research Inc was in Paris demonstrating over lines to the US how the Y-MP C90 supercomputer eats up three-dimensional seismic migration calculations: the company says that it demonstrated sustained 6 GFLOPS, 8 GFLOPS and 10 GFLOPS performance on three widely-used three-dimensional post- and pre-stack seismic migration codes used for processing and analysing field data to create images of the earth’s subsurface for the purpose of locating oil.
