Cray Research Inc is on its way to Silicon Graphics Inc unless Digital Equipment Corp intervenes to save its one Alpha design win. But in the meantime, life goes on and we hear that Cray is preparing an UltraSparc makeover for its high-end Sparc server product line in April as Xfire (Crossfire). Cray’s current four- to 64-way CS6400 SuperServers use 85MHz SuperSparcs and are taken OEM by the likes of Amdahl Corp. Sun Microsystems Inc’s UltraSparc servers, dubbed SunFire, are due April 15.
