CRAY OFFERS COMPUTER TIME FOR PERFORMANCE TESTS ON KEEL DESIGN FOR AMERICA’S CUP YACHTS

By CBR Staff Writer

Apart from the (quite untrue) legend that he lives in a cave in Chippewa Falls, Seymour Cray is celebrated for his passion for designing and sailing yachts – a funeral pyre consumes the latest each October so he has to design a new one – so where better for the Stars & Stripes syndicate to go than to Cray Research for free computer time to test the performance of an endless succession of keel designs? With that kind of support, it’s perhaps no surprise that Dennis Conner yesterday made it America’s Cup again, but don’t feel too sorry for the Kookaburra III syndicate – they got equal time on a Cray at the company’s UK subsidiary in Bracknell, Berkshire.
