A San Diego software house claims to have beaten Media Design in*Progress in the race to market the first server-side XML application (CI No 3,398). Miva, a database and server scripting technology from HTMLscript Corporation, was first introduced in November 1997 with an early version of XML. Three months later, the W3C working group on XML ratified the standard. According to HTMLscript president Joe Austin, Miva implemented that standard within hours. The product is also marketed by SoftQuad under the name HoTMetaL Application server.
