COREL LEANS TOWARDS JAVA OS FOR VIDEO NC

By CBR Staff Writer

The newly-formed Corel Computer Corp is currently evaluating operating systems for its forthcoming Video NC network computer. Interestingly, the company tells us that it is leaning towards sun Microsystems Inc’s Java OS, having looked at most other offerings, including HDS Network Systems Inc’s netOS, Microware System’s OS/9, WindRiver Systems Inc ‘s RTOS and so on. It would be a welcome fillip for JavaOS if it were to win out over its rivals, which are reportedly faster and cheaper, though Sun tells us this is not the case. The others are also widely available now, but by the time the much-delayed Video NC ships, JavaOS will probably be fully tested and shipping also.
