Corel Computer, a division of Corel Corp, has added a new Group Server model to its NetWinder line of Linux-based thin servers. Following the lead of its thin server rivals Network Appliance Inc and Cobalt Networks Inc, Corel has aimed the NetWinder Group Server at departmental workgroups and small businesses. The device runs on the StrongARM RISC microprocessor and comes with 32MB of RAM. The machines support HTTP/1.1, common gateway interface (CGI) and Perl scripting, HTML page authoring, email services, public and private threaded discussion, document indexing and sharing and cross-platform file sharing, which allows a NetWinder file server to support clients running Windows NT, 95 and Apple’s Macintosh OS. A diskless version will set buyers back $979. A NetWinder with a 2GB hard drive is priced at $1,339, with 4GB, $1,629 and with 6GB, $1,839. Linux is a crucial platform for the struggling Corel, which has also announced a port of its WordPerfect office suite to the open source operating system.
