IBM Corp’s networking products blitz yesterday included NetView for Windows, enabling network managers to bring Windows clients into their management embrace – but carefully omitted to mention that the core technology comes from a British company, Network Managers Ltd of Guildford, Surrey. NetView for Windows is based on the new NMC Vision product, and is described by IBM as a low-end Simple Network Management Protocol management application. It provides fault, configuration and performance management capabilities for hubs, bridges, routers and switches, and also includes trouble ticketing, Telnet capabilities, TCP/IP communications, and an integrated object-oriented database. It costs a one-time $1,900 and will be available at the end of next month.
