Convex Computer Ltd, Leatherhead, Surrey has installed a Convex C210 supercomputer at the Nottingham headquarters of the Natural Environment Research Council: the new machine replaces a DEC VAX, and will be used for vector and scalar applications; the 50 MFLOPS Unix-based computer is member of the air-cooled C Series, and uses 64-bit integrated scalar, vector, and parallel processing technology; the machine is to support growing demands from its scientists throughout the UK for more processing power, and the Environment Council hopes that it will also allow new services such as seismographic modelling to be offered to industry.
