CONTROVERSIAL US SALE TO JAPANESE COMPANY GOES THROUGH

Goleta, California-based Applied Magnetics Corp has completed the controversial sale of its Optical Products Division to Most Inc, a majority-owned subsidiary of Nakamichi Corp Japan on undisclosed terms: there were moves to get the sale of the designer and manufacturer of optical heads for optical disk drives to a Japanese company blocked on grounds that the technology was of strategic importance to the US; the unit had sales of approximately $1.7m in fiscal 1992 and is based in Monument, Colorado.
