Control Data Corp has finally managed to sell part of its loss-making VTC Inc semiconductor fabrication business – it has got rid of the bipolar semiconductor operation in a managment buyout. Terms were not disclosed but Control Data said that the new company would continue to be known as VTC and will have annual sales of $30m. About half of VTC’s 400-strong workforce will become part of the new VTC while the remain-der will stay with the CMOS integrated circuit operation. This latter operation is being hawked around and Control Data is discussing its sale with several parties. Meanwhile, current CMOS customers will be supported. However, if a buyer is not found soon, the CMOS operation will close.
