Two matters arising from Control Data Corp’s decision to close down its ETA Systems supercomputer business (see front page), the first being that if Chrysler Corp was too important to the US national interest to be allowed to go to the wall, in the context of the threat to the US lead in technology, it can be argued that ETA Systems was even more worthy of a bail-out from Uncle Sam at a fraction the cost of saving Chrysler (where the national interest was primarily the threat to employment rather than to its defence vehicle manufacturing business).
