Contactless card spending has increased fivefold in just one year.
June saw the value of purchases made with Visa’s contactless technology jump five times from the same month last year to £45.2m.
The number of payments increased that month to 6.8m compared to 1.4m the year before, while the number of payments in the UK reached 51m in the last 12 months.
Visa attributes the growth to its advertising campaign with Usain Bolt, and reports a total of £338m being spent via contactless card in the 12 months since the adverts launched.
VP Mark Austin, also the head of contactless at Visa Europe, said: "A year ago we launched the Contactless 2012 campaign to raise public awareness of contactless technology and the convenience and flexibility it brings to day to day payments.
"We are delighted to see the technology now being used so frequently on the high street as consumers become confident in making every day contactless payments and we’re excited about the number of new shops due to roll out contactless payment in the remainder of 2013."
The average value of a contactless card payment in the UK is £6.65, while there are 28m such cards in use across 280,000 contactless pay points.
Mobile phone contactless payments are being pushed by network operators and phone manufacturers, while Visa said more than 3m bus journeys were paid via its technology since December 2012.
