The UK Department of Trade & Industry is partially funding a project to develop a prototype Surgeon’s Assistant Robot: Logica Plc, Fulmar Systems Ltd, Taylor Hitec Ltd, Imperial College, Bristol University, University College, and Leeds General Infirmary, have formed a consortium to develop a prototype by 1992; the robot is being designed to follow plans and images generated by Xrays, ultrasound scans, and angiograms, but its tasks have still to be defined and tested after consultation with and analysis by medical consultants.
