Farmington Hills, Michigan-based Compuware Corp has abandoned a 6.2 upgrade of its Uniface development environment that was due this month, saying it will now jump straight to a major upgrade to go into beta test in October. Uniface 7.0 will include the object services and dynamic partitioning of the still-born Uni? face 6.2, plus a distributed computing manager with interfaces to transaction processing monitors and support for Computing Environment Remote Procedure Call. It will feature a clutch of Internet-Web capabilities including what it calls a no-client architecture, with a Web browser taking the place of a client. Compuware admits that it has closed down the Alameda, California Uniface research and development group with the loss of 20 jobs, but says it has moved its Dutch 4GL unit to new off?ices in Amsterdam, adding a further 50 staff for a total of 250.
