Compuware Corp, the company that wants to be in the top five software companies worldwide and sees systems management software as a major growth area (CI No 3,249), has strengthened its Fault- Xpert fault management software and added memory error detection and analysis, with the acquisition of technology from three other software companies. From MicroQuill Software Publishing Inc, it has bought HeapAgent, and from Applegate Software a product called SmartHeap, both of which provide memory detection and analysis tools which will be integrated into Fault-Xpert. Compuware says the addition of these products will enable customers to uncover and diagnose the most insidious errors any application can encounter. SmartHeap and HeapAgent provide heap memory management, which Compuware says helps applications run faster and more efficiently. They also monitor memory use and detect and analyze memory corruption. The company has also acquired VB/Rig from California-based PC Help-Line Inc. VB/Rig is a Visual Basic exception handler which Compuware will integrate with the Windows 95 version of Fault-Xpert. It says it will tell developers what the application was doing when the fault occurred by identifying the exact Visual Basic statement that failed to complete. Fault-Xpert is also available for OS/2, AIX and HP-UX.
