For ComputerLand Corp, retailer, read Vanstar Inc, computer services provider: the privately-held Pleasanton, California company has cut all ties with its past and changed its name. It has also won two big facilities management contracts, from Microsoft Corp, and ironically from Integrated Systems Solutions Co, IBM Corp’s own facilities management company. Under the deals, each valued at about $100m a year, Vanstar takes over in-house buying and installation of personal computers, a business it wants to grow alongside offering employee-training programmes and running in-house technical help desks. It says the 100 remaining company-owned ComputerLand outlets are now being transformed into branch offices for Vanstar’s computer-services business.
