It’s slightly ironic that ever since the Communications Decency Act (CDA) was overturned by the Supreme Court internet content and provider companies have been falling over themselves to prove that they are getting, or attempting to get to grips with obscene material on the net. Latest among them is CompuServe Corp, which said yesterday it has now sectioned off the adult content areas from the rest of its flagship CSi service. Earlier this week Prodigy Inc blocked access to child pornography news groups. However, we can’t help feeling this is something of an advert for CompuServe. The company touts the adult content area as one of k40 on the service, and potential users can start registering for passwords now for the service that starts august 5, and so on. CSi incorporates parental and other control software from the likes of Safesurf Inc and Microsystems Software Inc users only need to confirm that they are 18 to view the material, which is hardly much control at all.
