COMPETITION WILL FORCE GROWTH IN EURO SET-TOP BOXES

By CBR Staff Writer

Competition between rival broadcasters is likely to be the main factor behind a growth in the number of digital set-top boxes in Europe from one million to 13 million in 2002, say analysts Datamonitor. The fact that the UK has no set-top boxes is an indication of the power of dominant BSkyB. But services should begin next year and penetration will reach 11% by 2002. Penetration will be highest in Spain, driven by huge demand for football coverage.
