COMPEC EXHIBITION AT OLYMPIA CANCELLED

By CBR Staff Writer

You can erase Compec exhibition at Olympia in November from your 1988 diary entries: Cahners Exhibitions Ltd has cancelled the show after finding that the number and range of exhibitors contracted to appear failed to add up to a comprehensive show, adding that Compec allowed itself to be overshadowed by the soaring success of the Which Computer? Show; back in the early 1970s, Compec was established as an exhibition dedicated to the OEM peripherals market, and the attempt to broaden its range to create a UK rival to Hanover and Sicob never really succeeded, until in the end, nobody was quite sure what it was intended to be, and its demise reflects the trend away from all-things-to all-men exhibitions towards smaller, more focussed shows.
