That is the latest prognosis from Compass the cost-efficiency consultancy, which concludes from a just completed four-year survey, that much could be done to reduce the administration and cost burden of business email. It has suggested that the annual cost of administering and maintaining e-mail ranges from $70 to $240 per mailbox.

Compass recommends organizations can reduce their e-mail unit costs with an increased use of automation, and some pragmatic steps to reduce the numbers of mailboxes by type as well as limiting the storage space allowed per mailbox.

Ironically, though, 60% of users prefer e-mail because it allows for efficient communication with several people at once. . . At the same time, users wonder why they are copied on about a fifth of the messages they receive the company said.
