Compaq Computer Corp has adopted Digital Equipment Corp’s PowerStorm name (CI No 2,866) as well as ‘key technologies’ for its new range of 3D graphics accelerators. The accelerators are aimed at the workstation market from low-end systems to high-end Alpha and Intel-based workstations. The new line will support Windows NT and Compaq’s Digital Unix. All the accelerators will be based around Evans & Sutherland Inc’s REALimage 2100 SD chip and the high end models will also include a separate processor for geometry and lighting calculations. The company claims that the high end versions will outperform Hewlett-Packard Co’s Visualize and Intergraph Corp’s Intense 3D Pro graphics products. The first of the line will be a midrange model with PCI and AGP support, expected to be out in the third quarter of this year, with the other versions to follow later in the year. No details on pricing were released.
