Compaq Computer Corp has licensed Direct Rambus Technology from Rambus Inc to create higher performance large memory subsystems for future AlphaServer RISC systems. Compaq intends to develop AlphaServer systems that are capable of scaling to hundreds of gigabytes of memory while remaining reliable, says the company. The announcement takes Rambus into an area of the market it’s not so far been visible in: high-end systems using multiple gigabytes of memory. Compaq last week said it would support Rambus’ Direct Rambus technology, which is being fabricated by Toshiba Corp, LG Semicon Co Ltd and others. Mass production of the chip is expected to begin early next year.
