With the introduction of the Deskpro 386s this week Compaq has won the race to produce the first MS-DOS micro built around Intel’S new 16MHz 386SX microprocessor. The companion 25MHz Deskpro 386/25 is launched as the most powerful personal computer available in the world. The 386s, the first 386 machine for people considering a 286 machine according to Compaq, includes a VGA graphics controller. It comes in three models, a Model 1 with 1Mb CPU and 1.2Mb floppy for UKP2,195; the same with 20Mb disk for UKP2,695 and with 40Mb disk, UKP3,095. The 386/25 incorporates the 25MHz Intel 82385 cache memory controller with its own 32Kb of 25nS static RAM. It can also be equipped with up to 1.2Gb disk when two of the new Compaq 300/600 expansion units are used. With 1Mb CPU and 300Mb disk it’s UKP7,295, with 110Mb disk it’s UKP5,595. Both are out now but 386s supply is limited till August.
